Oats are one of the oldest cultivated grains, first grown in Europe thousands of years ago, and they remain a staple today because of their nutrition. Unlike many cereals, oats contain a soluble fibre called beta glucan which has been widely studied for its role in helping to maintain normal cholesterol levels. They also provide slow release carbohydrates that support steady energy. Oats naturally contain manganese, phosphorus and magnesium, which are minerals involved in bone health and energy metabolism. They are also a source of protein compared with most grains, averaging around 12 g per 100 g. These porridge oats are simply rolled oat groats with no further processing, keeping all the bran and germ intact.
